Lucy Adderley named player of the season for the first half of the campaign as Chester FC Women head into the winter break.
Adderley topped the SealsTalk best player poll seeing off competition from Sarah Redman, Rachel Lever and Amy Smith.
Adderley received 41% of the votes, clear day light between her and second placed Redman, who received 21%. Top scorer Lever finished third with 20% and Amy Smith took fourth with 18% of the vote.
Adderley's thoughts...
The centre back was surprised to be shortlisted for the best player award and says how 'buzzing' she is to win.
“I’m buzzing, I didn’t think I’d even be in the top four” says Adderley.
Adderley has got four goals this year from centre back, which is second most alongside Sarah Gill, however she is still four goals off of top scorer Lever.
Adderley has her eye on catching Lever up.
“I’m going for Rachel’s tally. I need a lot of penalties and a lot more corners and I’m going for Lever!” I’m going to get Lever’s ankles in training and I’m going to be top goal scorer!
“I want to score some more goals and keep clean sheets, which is what I would rather do. I want the team to get back to winning ways.”
The Goals
It was an incredible start for Adderley as she scored a brace on the first game of the season and kept a clean sheet against Burscough Ladies. She followed up her brace with a player of the match performance and another goal against West Kirby.
The centre back is dangerous from set pieces and makes a menace of herself in and around the box, making herself incredibly difficult to handle.
Her most recent goal came against Liverpool Feds, in a 2-1 loss. Her goal scoring is really impressive as she has a very modern style of play, with a distinct determination to contribute offensively. As well as doing what she does best, which is defending.
The Performances
Adderley has been incredibly consistent at the heart of Chester's defence. She will battle and throw herself in the way of shots and be an all round pain for opposing strikers. Her and Kim Sands have struck a great partnership at the back, as they defend valiantly every game.
Adderley epitomises the modern day defender, as she isn't just good at traditional defending, but is comfortable playing out from the back.
She will start attacks and get her team moving up the pitch, but will be as equally effective stopping attacks at the other end.
Overall Adderley has had a very solid year as she will look to kick on in 2020 after having a well deserved winter break.
