Chester FC Women manager Martin Fitzsimons admitted he couldn't be more prouder of his team following Sunday's defeat. The Seals fell to their first home loss of the season going down 2-0 to Altrincham in a game that Chester struggled to make inroads in for huge parts of the game.
Speaking to SealsTalk after game Fitzsimons gave us his thoughts and reaction following Chester's 2-0 defeat.
" I think we worked hard I think up till the last 30 minutes we didn't test them as much as I would have liked. The quality for me wasn't there in the final third too may balls were just played too far in-front and they were able to get a toe . We worked hard throughout the game and i cannot fault the girls attitude and commitment".
Following Amy Broomhead's double from the bench last week against Wythenshawe, the forward was rewarded with a place in the starting XI, allowing Sarah Gill just push further back and sit in-front of the defence. I asked what was his thinking behind this.
" Yeah we felt like we needed to reward Broomy (Amy Broomhead) for her efforts last week and the impact she gave coming off the bench, so giving her first start was important for us.
And for Sarah we know that she's not going to run sprints and do all the leg work that other plays do like Ashleigh Bullock and Amy Smith who just run for days . Gill just looks to secure everything so we looked to put her in there and give us a pivot to build from"
.In the final 30 minutes Chester applied huge amounts of pressure to the Altrincham defence, but were unable to break though, Fitzsimons admited that the chances were there for his side but it just wasn't meant to be for the Seals.
"I think it was one of them days a bad day at the office really and unfortunately we weren't able to get the goals we needed in the end. We pushed for the equalizer but credit to Altrincham they set up really well and made it hard for us"
Coming into the game the Blues had won two games on the spin and were looking to make it three, something that didn't quite happen. Despite the loss the Chester boss admitted it wasn't time to get back to the drawing board just yet.
"Again the last half an hour we looked like a Chester team who wanted to play. wanted to win, and had the hunger to go and sore goals. But the first 60 minutes we looked out of sorts, in possession we struggled whereas out of it we played well. But for large parts of the game we were just out of ideas. So it is a case of encourging that last 30 minutes and make sure that this is the Chester DNA.
