Martin Fitzsimons: We controlled the game

Chester FC Women's manager Martin Fitzsimons was very pleased with his team's performance, despite dropping a two-goal lead to Warrington Wolverines on Sunday.

The Blues took a two goal advantage into the second half through goals from midfielder Amy Smith and player/coach Sarah Gill, only to be pegged back at the death.

Fitzsimons had very little complaints with his side's performance on the day, unfortunately only being let down by a few individual mistakes.

“General performance today was really high quality," he said, "I felt like we controlled the game from start to finish.

"Even the goals we did give away, they came from our own doing. It’s just that 1% we need to get right and when we do, we’ll be able to match teams in this league and the league above without question."

Chester started the game superbly and definitely came out with a point to prove following last week's 6-2 defeat to Salford, in which they started slow.

Fitzsimons was very pleased with this early start, as it was something the team prioritised in the pre-match game plan.

“We wanted a response after last weekend," he said, "I felt like we got that.

“We changed bit of what we do and our pre-match preparation, so I was really pleased with that.

"We mentioned it before the game that it’s something that needs to change and we mentioned it in training a couple times as well. To get the goals as well just confirmed that solid start that we made."

Despite all of this it's easy to look at this game as two points dropped for the Seals, especially since the Wolverines sit very closely to Chester in the league.

Manager Fitzsimons insisted his team must not look back on this game in such a way, and must move forward and take confidence in to next week.

"Performance levels were really good," he said. "There were lots of positives for us today.

"I don’t think we can dwell too much on the goals we did concede because overall, I wanted a reaction and in terms of development points, we hit all of them."

Even so, the Seals gaffer will be hoping his side can pick up all three points in their next league outing, to have something to show for their good performance.
