'Do or die' game for the Seals

Manager Martin Fitzsimons labels Sunday's game as 'do or die' as Chester FC Women take on West Kirby at Ellesmere Port Sports Village. The Seals look to get back to winning ways after an indifferent season so far for the Cheshire team.

The Blues defeated West Kirby in their last match and knocked them out of the Cheshire County Cup. The manager believes that the win last time out will give his side the motivation to get all three points.

“We’re very much looking forward to it” said Fitzsimons. “We got a good result and had a solid performance on a difficult pitch, in tough conditions, the last time we played them. We’re looking forward to getting them back on our pitch where we can play the brand of football we like to play.”

The Cheshire side had their most recent game against Didsbury Ladies postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. Chester had to deal with difficult conditions at Marine Park only a week before, as the game just about managed to stay on. Fitzsimons looks to get back to playing at home on an artificial turf and get a faster game of football.

“Pitches particularly at this level can be bobbly, as we even seen in the professional leagues the other week with Tranmere against United. Pitches like that are generally a standard for us and West Kirby’s weren’t that bad last week and they did well to get the game on because we know they’ve had a lot of games cancelled.

“In terms of 3G the ball moves that bit quicker, you can trust your first touch as it’s level and just in general speeds up our play.”

West Kirby defeated the Seals in the first game of the season and Fitzsimons’ side avenged that defeat in the cup. The Blues now have a chance to again inflict defeat on their opponent. The gaffer believes the win will give the girls a lot of confidence going into Sunday’s game.

“Yeah definitely (we have confidence), we came off the back of two good performances, obviously not the result against Manchester Stingers. We were disappointed that we didn’t get the game on last weekend because we wanted to carry on that momentum. Training has been positive tonight (Tuesday) and we will look for that again on Thursday.”

Chester currently sit in fourth place and have lost their last two league matches as gaining results is becoming incredibly important for Fitzsimons, who labelled the game as 'do or die.'

“It seems like ages ago since we played a league game, but we are positive after coming off the back of the cup games and we always seem to do well in cup games. The players have that do or die mentality and that’s what we need to take into our league games and get the three points on the board. There’s always a next week, but we need to take that out of our minds and approach it as do or die this week.”

The Seals will be back in action at 2pm this Sunday at Ellesmere Port Sports Village, come on down and support the ladies!
