Opinion: Why recent results aren’t cause for concern…

Chester FC Women have gone through a difficult period recently, as Martin Fitzsimons’ side are struggling for results.

The Seals are currently on a four-game losing streak, as the Blues bowed out of the Argyle Cup to Manchester Stingers at the first hurdle.

Chester have also lost back to back home games in the league and a friendly match against The New Saints Ladies, however, despite results not going their way there isn’t cause for concern… and here is why…

Played well against top opposition

The Seals have come up against some difficult opponents this season but have generally held their own and put in some impressive performances. In the early stage of the season Chester handed Salford Lionesses their one and only loss of the season, with a fantastic 3-1 win.

More recently the Blues have lost to higher division outfits, granted they were outplayed in the first half of the TNS friendly, but in the second 45 minutes they matched the Saints. Similarly, Manchester Stingers knocked Chester out of the cup, but the home side could have pulled off a cup upset if chances had been taken.

Missed chances

Fitzsimons’ team gave a great account of themselves against the Stingers and missed a plethora of chances. Amy Smith came close to opening the scoring as Rachel Lever uncharacteristically struggled to find the back of the net.

The Seals have played very well in recent weeks despite results not going their way, however they have been architects of their own downfall at times. Lucy Adderley’s missed penalty on the stroke of half time against the Feds could have been a turning point if she had converted.

Nevertheless, with more composure in front of goal and a slice of luck Chester can turn their fortunes around.

Rachel Lever’s goals

Lever has been incredibly important for her side this season notching up ten goals. Although in the cup game against Stingers she struggled in front of goal but she still put in a tenacious 90 minutes and on another day would have won the tie for the Blues.

If she can continue finding the back of the net, her goals and leadership will navigate Chester to a strong finish, after all she ‘always plays to win’.

Talented squad

The Blues are blessed with an incredibly talented squad, particularly a strong midfield, which is full of depth.

Smith put in a player of the match performance at the weekend, with her determined, aggressive style of play which complimented her midfield partners. Ashleigh Bullock can pick up the ball and make things happen while Sarah Redman can sit and shield the back four. On form that is a dangerous combination.

Fitzsimons has an abundance of talent at his disposal and with some consistency they can beat anyone.

Fourth in the table

Despite results being less than ideal in recent weeks, Chester still occupy fourth place, a single point behind Warrington Wolverines. A side which the Seals still have to play after drawing 2-2 in the reverse fixture, a game they followed up with back to back victories.

The Blues should fancy their chances against Warrington, while a tough test against Curzon Ashton is also on the horizon. With the level of talent and performances that have been put in this season there’s no reason why Chester can’t kick on and beat these teams.

Still in the cup

Finally, there is always the magic of the cup, as the Seals are up against West Kirby in the second round of the Cheshire Cup, a competition which Chester got to the semi-finals of last season. A win on Sunday could be the catalyst Fitzsimons’ side need to finish the season strong, and who knows maybe win some silverware...
