Chester FC Women suffer back to back league home defeats as Liverpool Feds Reserves gain a much needed three points.
Chester were looking to bounce back from defeats to The New Saints Women and Altrincham Ladies, but were denied by Rosie Kinvig’s brilliance, as she played a massive part in her sides 4-2 victory.
Liverpool Feds number seven ran the game and scored two important goals as Lauren Pattison and Caitlin Ferguson secured all three points for the Feds.
Rachel Lever’s double wasn’t enough for the Blues, as they slipped to their first defeat of the year and failed to capitalise on rivals dropping points.
The Seals could have leapfrogged Warrington Wolverines into third place with a win, while the away side gained only their second victory of the season and pulled away from the bottom two.
Chester had a perfect start as Lever opened the scoring for the Blues in the 13th minute. Sarah Redman, on her return to the squad after an injury, smartly won possession in midfield before clipping the ball over the defence to Lever. The clinical forward made no mistake from close range as she brought the ball under control and slotted her effort under the goalkeeper.
The Feds responded quickly ten minutes later as their forward managed to round goalkeeper Ana Duran before an incredible last-ditch tackle from skipper Lauren Quigg managed to snuff out what nearly was an equaliser.
The team from Merseyside eventually drew level a matter of minutes later as Kinvig got her first of the afternoon. A free-kick from the left was not dealt with properly as Duran initially made a save before the ball fell to Kinvig who made no mistake from close range.
The talented forward soon gave her side the lead through a lovely header. Sharples’ delicate chipped ball found Kinvig who dived down low to meet the cross as the ball bounced into Duran’s far corner.
Martin Fitzsimons’ side were given a lifeline on the stroke of half time with a penalty kick after a Feds defender handled the ball in the area. Up stepped Lucy Adderley, who was recently voted the best player of the first half of the season. Adderley was unable to do the double over the Liverpool side, whom she scored against earlier in the season, as her penalty was blasted over the bar.
The second half was a similar story for the Cheshire side as Amy Broomhead failed to capitalise on a defensive error as a stray pass across the box fell to Broomhead who couldn’t take advantage of the complacent Greens.
The Seals were punished for their lack of cutting edge in front of goal as they went 3-1 down in the 73rd minute. Sharples rocket shot flew into the top left corner from the edge of the box which gave the Spaniard between the sticks no chance. A mere couple of minutes later the Feds wrapped the game up with their fourth.
Ferguson finished from close range and piled on the misery for the Blues who simply weren’t at the races. The introduction of Sarah Gill managed to give Chester a lift as her tenacious play and link up with the forwards proved vital.
Gill found a pocket of space in the final third after collecting the ball on her chest and knocked the ball over the top for Lever to volley home from the edge of the box. The Seals’ top scorer entered double figures for the season with her fantastic goal but it was simply not enough to turn the tie around.
Chester’s number eleven added to Liverpool Feds’ dismal goal difference, the worst in the league by far. Nevertheless, the Feds will return to Merseyside with all three points and their second win of the season.
The Seals will look to bounce back next weekend at home to Manchester Stingers in the Argle Sports Cup, a competition they got to the semi-finals of last year.
